Every year at around this time, Warren Morrison and Sue McGarrity get in front of a microphone to thank a lot of people.
Warren is the chairperson and Sue the deputy chairperson of one of the most remarkable charities ever created, the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur.
They have been running the organisation since the passing of the charity’s founder Fred Borg in 2016.
With the help of a hard working committee, and the enthusiastic support of the Campbelltown and Macarthur community, the money raised by 24 Hour has transformed the local cancer therapy centre into a class of its own.
From a bus to take patients to and from the cancer therapy centre for free, to gowns with dignity features for radiation patients, every cent of the $6.15 million raised by 24 Hour so far has helped create a world class facility at Campbelltown Hospital.
And while a lot of the money raised every year is through various activations, much of it is thanks to the sponsors of 24 Hour.
Thus it’s to thank the sponsors that the annual launch is dedicated to every year, with Sue and Warren doing the honours, including presenting framed certificates.
And that’s precisely what happened this morning at the launch of the 2026 “season’’.
Both generously sing the praises of the sponsors, which includes small and large business, football clubs such as Wests Tigers and Macarthur FC Bulls, and many others.
But it occurred to me that nobody ever thanks Warren and Sue and their committee for their hard work over the years.
Well, let me do it, because, well, someone’s got to do it.
To me, when I look at their contribution to cancer treatment right here in Campbelltown is exactly the kind of thing the national honours were designed to do.
One day someone may just fill in an Order of Australia nomination form with the names of Warren Morrison and Sue McGarrity on them.
I hope it happens sooner rather than later because both Sue and Warren have earned such an honour.
In the meantime, Sue and Warren, a big thank you on behalf of everyone who calls the Macarthur region home.
