The winner of the first Liverpool Borrowed Wall Art competition will receive a $10,000 cash prize as well as a $10,000 budget for the complete installation of the artwork.

Deputy mayor of Liverpool, Cr Tony Hadchiti, is launching the new art competition this morning at the venue which will display the entries, Liverpool City Library in George Street. Liverpool Library’s Evangeline Roberts will also take part in this morning’s launch.

Artists will be invited to submit entries to be displayed on the front wall of the library.

The library wall space is 6 metres by 8.8 metres, and council says it’s the perfect location for public art as the library receives more than 1,000 visitors each day.

The Borrowed Wall Art Prize is part of plans to reinvigorate this space annually by supporting young artists with a cash prize, and the resources to create a large scale artwork on the library’s facade.

Council says its vision for the future is for Liverpool to be a vibrant regional city of opportunity, prosperity and diversity.

Reinvigorating the cityscape into a lively and dynamic public space is a key component of that, and, council says, is based on a strong tradition of supporting the delivery of quality artworks and art experiences.

The competition will be open to young artists aged 18-30 and council hopes the winning artwork will reflect the contemporary library experience. It will show that a library is no longer just a place for borrowing books but an immersive and vibrant cultural space where the diversity of the community is celebrated.

Entries to the competition will open on January 27 and close 5pm on March 11.

The winning artwork will be installed between March 28 and April 14.
