Council surveillance cameras to catch rubbish dumpers in the act

Rubbish dumpers could find themselves in a world of trouble if one local council goes ahead with plans to use covert surveillance cameras to catch them in the act.

In a move that could set a precedent for other council areas across the South Western Sydney region, Liverpool Council is currently exploring the option of cameras in hotspots to apprehend illegal dumpers.

The plans were revealed in a written response to a resident who brought council’s attention to a recent rubbish dump on Jardine Drive at Edmondson Park.

Michael Andjelkovic, the community campaigner who ran unsuccessfully for Liverpool mayor at the December 4 elections, asked the council to take some action.

“I have been contacted by a number of local residents and would like to bring to your attention the ongoing issue of illegal rubbish dumping on Jardine Drive in Edmondson Park,’’ he wrote.

He included the picture of the rubbish dump, above.

“This has been on ongoing issue for years and is getting worse,’’ Mr Andjelkovic wrote in his note to the council on January 11.

“Liverpool Council needs to take more action against this type of anti-social, anti-community behaviour.

“Edmondson Park is not the only suburb that has been impacted by illegal rubbish dumping in the Liverpool LGA.’’

Council was quick to respond to Mr Andjelkovic, to inform him that the rubbish had been picked up and that a range of other measures were being taken or considered, including the use of surveillance cameras.

They too sent pictures (below) of the clean up at Jardine Ave.

“Council acknowledges the community’s frustration with illegal dumping especially in a new suburb such as Edmondson Park,’’ they said in their reply.

“While we encourage the community to use all the services council offers, the Waste Team remains committed to seeking options to address the challenges of illegal dumping.

“Along Jardine Drive, the council has recently erected fencing and placed concrete blocks on the roadsides to prevent dumping.

“In addition, we are working towards building community awareness through advertising on our illegal waste trucks and a new proactive tracking and reporting system to monitor illegal dumping in the LGA.’’

  1. Council has had covert cameras in the area for more than 18 months. I have witnessed drug deals and illegal dumping taking place while Council staff was present. I wonder why the evidence gained has not been used? I will ask relevant questions at the next Council Meeting. If Council has obtained evidence, why is it not being published? Surely it would make those intent on dumping think before doing so? Possibly legal implications have prevented Council from naming and shaming? Cr Peter Harle.
