♦ For something a little different, Theseus and the Minotaur come to Casula Powerhouse on Sunday, June 21 when trumpeter-composer Ellen Kirkwood leads her band in the telling of the Greek legend of Theseus and his battle to the death with King Minos’ monstrous cannibal creature, the Minotaur.

Theseus and the Minotaur is set against a dramatic musical score over five movements, with narration by Ketan Joshi.

The audience is treated to an enthralling and original interpretation of this well-known story.

Snorting clarinets and off-kilter rhythms transport you to the haunting subterranean world of the tortured half-man half-beast.

Unyielding trumpets evoke Theseus’ pity and courage against this wilful monster, which culminates into a thrilling final clash.

Played by some of Sydney’s leading and up-and-coming jazz artists, Theseus and the Minotaur cleverly captures this ancient tale of terror and triumph.

There are two shows, at 11am and 1pm. Cost is $5. Bookings, enquiries: telehone 9824 1121; email reception@casulapowerhouse.com

Snugglepot♦ On Wednesday, June 24, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre will present Snugglepot & Cuddlepie, a delightful adaptation of the quintessentially Australian series of books by May Gibbs. There will be two performances, 11.30am and 6pm.

May Gibbs’ Australian classics have fascinated and delighted generations of children, introducing them to the wonder and magic of the Australian bush. On their journey to the big city the Gumnut babies meet familiar friends and foes including Professor Kookaburra, Mrs Fantail, Mr Lizard, Mr Frog, Mrs Snake, Mr Possum and, of course, Little Ragged Blossom.

These beloved characters all come to life on stage as this funny, enchanting production introduces today’s children to the wonderful world of May Gibbs.
