For years now, pizza night at our household means home made.
The delicious pizza base comes from a local woodfired oven and includes a little bit of tomato sauce on it.
So when Thursday rolls around it’s just a matter of deciding what the toppings will be, add the grated cheese and into the oven for 10 minutes.
A few weeks ago we heard a traditional pizzeria had opened in the heart of Campbelltown.
The word of mouth was pretty positive, so last Thursday week, the day worked out in such a way that we decided to have a break and go and try Tonino’s pizzas at 101 Queen Street, which is almost on the corner with Railway Street.
Knowing it was a BYO we grabbed a bottle of red and headed down to the main street, parked 50 metres around the corner and walked into the pizzeria to be greeted by Anthony, the owner.
We double checked we could open our wine, and proceeded to order four small pizzas, as per our strategy to try as many as possible without being totally ridiculous.
We opted to get two traditional pizzas and two gourmet, all small one.
From gourmet we selected a Quattro Stagioni or Four Seasons and a Mediterranean.
The two traditional pizzas we ordered were Napoli and Mexicana.
Orders taken by Anthony, we sat at a table down the front of the pizzeria and watched the world go by on Queen Street.
A steady stream of customers came in while we waited, some ordering take-away and others sitting down inside the pizzeria.
Before we knew it four delicious looking pizzas were put on our table by Anthony, and we wasted no time hooking in.
The pizzas had plenty of topping on them and the bases were all thin, New York style.
The verdict: we couldn’t pick a favourite because they were all delicious.
For me at least, these are best pizzas in Campbelltown, maybe in Macarthur.
For us it was also a lovely experience, not having eaten along Queen Street for a fair while.
And for someone like me who writes about Campbelltown, it was really good to see so many people on our main street during the evening.
As for the pizzas, while we will return to making our own, Tonino’s were so good we’ll definitely be going back on a regular basis – especially any Thursday I don’t feel like cooking!
They’re open for lunch Wednesday to Saturday (12-3pm), and dinner Tuesday to Sunday (5pm-10pm). Their phone number is 4611 7997.
