Disability Trust has helped Qui gain a measure of independence

Local resident Qui is excited about the opportunity via the Disability Trust to continue expanding his English skills and participating more in the community.

Qui has been receiving support from The Disability Trust since 2012 with day to day activities.

During that time, he has moved into his own unit, and is becoming more independent in accessing the community.

One of his support workers employed by The Disability Trust, teaches Vietnamese every Saturday and recognised that one of Qui’s goals was to increase his English skills.

The staff member reversed all of her Vietnamese lesson plans to cater for Qui to learn English.

Steadily, Qui has improved his English; he continues to work with his support worker to increase his English knowledge and is now able to communicate in the community both in Vietnamese and English.

Qui is able to communicate without the need for a translator or support worker, sign his name as well as complete paperwork either at Centrelink or at the airport when he travels.

Qui’s self-esteem and confidence has increased with his English; Qui accesses the local gym and also attends an Art group facilitated by The Disability Trust at their Campbelltown office.

Qui is extremely happy with his new independence and support from The Disability Trust.

Disability Trust says NDIS coming on July 1

With the July 1 start date approaching for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) services in South West Sydney, The Disability Trust is holding free information sessions to help reduce confusion and help stakeholders to prepare.

“Every day we are fielding questions about the NDIS, what it means and what families need to do,’’ says Katharine Carney, executive manager of the Disability Trust.

[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“Our information sessions will give people the information they need to understand the scheme and work out how they can be a part of the NDIS when it starts.[/social_quote]

“The information is relevant for people with a disability and carers of people with a disability, although everyone is welcome to attend.

“It is a chance for people to come along and discover everything they would like to know about the NDIS and what it means for people living in South West Sydney,’’ Ms Carney said.

The sessions will include

• The latest update on the progress of the NDIS;

• What you can be doing now to get ready for the NDIS;

• What support is available.

The next information session will be held at Campbelltown City Library this Thursday, February 18 between 6pm and 7pm.
