liverpool hospital entranceFor 20 years Liverpool Hospital Cancer Service has been helping local people fight cancer.

The hospital’s cancer centre opened its doors in May 1995 and has grown significantly from just two departments to a comprehensive hub with state of the art care and treatment 20 years later.

Liverpool Hospital’s director of cancer services Dr Eugene Moylan said the centre had grown exponentially in its first 20 years.

“Today, the centre includes genetics, gynecology, haematology, bone marrow transplantation and apherisis units, medical and radiation oncology and palliative care,” Dr Moylan said.

“We treat many types of adult cancers here, using some of the best equipment and technology available, including chemotherapy, targeted systemic therapies, image-guided radiotherapy (including Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI) and have stereotactic and tomotherapy radiotherapy facilities.

“Supportive care treatments have also improved dramatically over the past 20 years, increasing the tolerability and safety of cancer treatments.

“Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre has over 180 staff providing care and treatment to more than 5,000 new patients each year.

Dr Moylan said 20th anniversary celebrations were centred on a gala dinner, to be held on Saturday, May 23 at Liverpool Catholic Club.

“It will be a great celebration of how far we’ve come and will include dinner, drinks and entertainment,” Dr Moylan said.

“We’ll be recognising our achievements and looking to the future of local cancer services.

“In particular we are excited about the new Cancer Wellness Centre to be built at Liverpool.

“The wellness centre will help patients, cancer survivors and their families with specialised programs, information and advice and psychological support following cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“Funds raised through the gala dinner will be used to get our wellness centre up and running,” he said.

As well as the gala dinner, anniversary celebrations will include a Cancer Therapy GP Forum and Open Day at Liverpool Hospital on Saturday, May 16.

The forum (more details below) will provide information on advances in cancer management and services provided by the Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre, as well as referral information and a tour of the centre.

A Cancer Research Showcase will also be held on May 22 to acknowledge past and present staff achievements and showcase future projects, Cancer Services Strategic Plans, education and research presentations.
