NSW Golf Open qualifier: We’re on the second hole but the skies are about to open up and send the golfers scurrying back into the clubhouse of Camden Golf Club.

It has been going since 1931 and is one of sport’s most prestigious tournaments.

It’s golf’s NSW Open men’s championship and a little slice of it is in Macarthur over two days.

More than 40 amateur golfers dreaming of emulating former Open winners such as Greg Norman – who won it four times – Peter Lonard, Craig Parry and Jack Newton, gathered at Camden Golf Glub for a regional qualifying event of the 2016 Open.

Just one of the 40-off golfers who teed off under overcast skies at noon in Camden will qualify for the big one between November 10 and 13 at the Greg Norman designed Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club in Western Sydney.

There was a smattering of Macarthur residents among the participating golfers, who at least will have local knowledge over those from further afield.

A couple of outsiders we spoke to though admitted they had been coming over to Camden to familiarise themselves with the course.

Unfortunately for all the golfers at Camden today, the skies opened up just after a couple of holes and they had to quickly move back inside the clubhouse high up at Studley.

But blues skies returned just as quickly as they had disappeared and the action was on again for young and old at the Camden Council sponsored event.

The winner will be known by around 2pm tomorrow but we will have to wait until the completion of the Open on November 13 to find out if the winner from Camden is destined for bigger and better things in the world of golf.

Including the chance to play for a record prize pool of $400,000 at this year’s Open.

Time to concentrate, as it's moments before tee off at noon.
