Coming home for trial match: Waratahs superstar fullback Israel Folau

Superstar Israel Folau, who grew up in Minto, will be one of the main attractions next month when Campbelltown Sports Stadium hosts a Super 15 rugby trial clash between last season’s premiers, the NSW Waratahs, and the Chiefs from New Zealand.

The other drawcard of the match scheduled for Friday, February 6 could well be dual international Sonny Bill Williams, who has returned to rugby after starring at the Sydney Roosters for the past two years. Williams is now contracted to the Chiefs.

The evening match is guaranteed to draw a sizeable crowd, especially if both Sonny Bill Williams and Israel Folau are named to play the match.

It’s been a long time since former Minto local Folau last played any game of football here, but like Jarryd Hayne he still has a lot of supporters in the Campbelltown area.

The last time the Waratahs played at Campbelltown was in 2008.

The February 6 match will be the only time that the Waratahs play the Chiefs at home in the 2015 Super Rugby competition.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Lake, said the game was a great opportunity to see the best of rugby in action. It would also highlight the venue’s capacity to host major events on a national and international level.

“I’ve been saying for a long time that Campbelltown Sports Stadium is one of the best facilities on offer in Sydney, if not NSW,” Cr Lake said.

“Securing this game shows that our facility is second to none, with fantastic transport connections and accessibility to parking, and I encourage everyone to go along and enjoy a great night of world-class rugby action.

“Campbelltown is now a regional city centre in its own right, but it also takes the crown as the sporting capital of south west Sydney and I will continue to campaign strongly for our stadium to become Sydney’s third major sporting venue,” Cr Lake added.

The Waratahs V Chiefs (NZ) match will kick off at 7.30pm.

Tickets can be purchased online at ww.proticket.com.au, or at the gate on the night – Adult $20, Concession $15, Child (12 and under) $10, Family (two adults + two children or one adult + three children) $50.
