It’s boom boom time and maybe even a bit funny

Terry Bradbury, right, with the mayor, Paul hawker, a the Jubilee Awards last week.

Harlequins legend Terry Bradbury is also a very funny man.

During an interview last week after receiving a Jubilee award from Campbelltown Council, we asked Terry how he ended up with a rugby club, having been a league man in his younger days.

After patiently explaining how he jumped the fence more than 40 years ago and is still there, Terry threw in this little comedic grenade: “What’s the difference between rugby league and rugby union’’?

He went on to answer it himself.

Drum roll, please.

“Play rugby league, get a street directory. Play rugby, get an atlas.’’

Boom boom.

♦ Labor MP and councillor Anoulack Chanthivong, who was present at the Jubilee awards ceremony, told the Voice in Macarthur that the credit for the popular honours should go to his party, and in particular the late councillor and mayor Brenton Banfield, who made a big push for them at the time.

♦ Today is May 24, which means there are fewer than 40 days before this marathon federal election campaign is over and we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

But how many more announcements will become a blur by July 2 is anybody’s guess.

Just in case you’re keeping count of promises so far, we’re getting $50 million for Appin Road whoever wins, and which is nowhere near what is needed to make it a truly safe highway.

Then we had the promise by the Prime Minister himself to provide free of charge sugar level monitors to diabetes sufferers in Macarthur and across the land.

Remember that one?

What about the storm in a tea cup when the Labor candidate for Macarthur Dr Mike Freelander was quoted saying offshore processing of asylum seekers was akin to the Nazi Holocaust.

Russell Matheson, who is the sitting member, slammed the comments, saying this is a “disgraceful slur on the men and women that risk their lives to protect our borders, and the entire Australian community.’’

And the caravan moves on.

♦ Dr Freelander pretty much hasn’t opened his mouth since then, although addressing the Ingleburn chamber of commerce he revealed that the two major local hospitals were among the most efficient in the country.

“Did you know that a hip replacement operation can cost almost three times in an inner city hospital in Sydney or Melbourne; in Campbelltown and Liverpool hospitals they do those for around $5,000, but they are $15,000 in the inner city hospitals,’’ Dr Freelander said.

♦ Speaking of Ingleburn chamber, it has joined forces with other Macarthur business bodies for a special luncheon at Wests, Leumeah on June 2 when Chris Bowen, federal shadow treasurer, will be the guest speaker.
