Thank you, Jubilee award recipients

Jubilee Award
The 2016 Jubilee Award recipients.

Awards tend to feel a little hollow at the best of times.

Apart from anything else, there are just too many awards – of all kinds.

We actually go a bit crazy on Australia Day although most of those awards tend to hit the mark.

Especially compared to some of the commercial awards, of which there are quite a few around.

But I am not here to bury awards – I am here to praise awards.

Well, at least one.

Campbelltown’s Jubilee awards have got a real feel good factor about them which cannot be denied.

First of all they cannot be manipulated because to receive one simply involves a milestone, in this case 50 years of being a bona fide, fair dinkum, dinky-di Campelltonian.

So if you haven’t been living in our terrific town for 50 years you can forget about getting the letter from the mayor saying you’ve qualified for a Jubilee award.

I managed to attend the presentation ceremony this year and it confirmed everything I thought about them.

Listening to the mayor read out their stories as the recipients walk up to receive their plaque and a small trophy you know for sure these people are what make Campbelltown great.

Each contribution varies in quantity but not in the spirit that it was made by each recipient.

The goodness of their deeds over 50 years have all made a difference to this place we call home.

So on behalf of the other 150,000 Campbelltown locals, I’d like to say to the 51 fellow residents  who received a Jubilee Award last week: thank you.
