Youth unemployment in Campbelltown continues to rise under the Baird Government, according to the latest ABS statistics.
And local Labor MP Greg Warren is not happy.
He says the state government is guilty of not having a plan to help young people into jobs and careers.
The number of people between the ages of 15 and 24 years old who are out of work in Sydney’s outer south western suburbs, including Campbelltown, has risen to 16.3 per cent of the region’s population, according to the ABS figures.
Since the Liberal Government took office in 2011 there are more than 2000 extra unemployed young people in the region – almost double the amount since Labor left office.
Today there are almost 5000 young people out of work in south western Sydney, one of the city’s fastest growing areas.
The closure of TAFE campuses, the reduction of courses and the rise in fees is exacerbating the problem as it leaves young people with fewer avenues to gain skills, says Mr Warren.
“The Baird Government is failing to invest in our future – our young people,’’ the MP said today in the wake of the new ABS statistics.
“Instead of finding ways to help young people in Campbelltown get a foot on the ladder, the government is actively making it harder for them to get ahead in life.
“This government doesn’t have a plan for the economy after the housing boom and it certainly doesn’t have a plan for our young people.”
