Liverpool City Mayor Wendy Waller says construction of Woolworths’ two new distribution centres within the Moorebank Logistics Park will create more than 1300 local jobs over the next four years.

“This investment is a welcome boost to our local economy as we need more local jobs to help in the recovery phase after the unprecedented challenges of Covid-19 last year,’’ Cr Waller said.

Work on the distribution centres has started this week.

The Moorebank Logistics Park precinct covers an area of more than 243 hectares.

When completed, it will comprise of a dedicated freight rail line from Port Botany with onward connections to the national rail network.

The Moorebank facility will be capable of moving 1.5 million shipping containers a year by rail instead of road.

It is anticipated this could take more than 2,600 heavy truck movements off Sydney’s roads each day, although intermodal opponents dispute the numbers.

“We know the terminal is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week facility, which could potentially generate over 3,000 jobs for local people and Liverpool Council will work closely with training providers to ensure this comes to fruition,’’ Cr Waller said.

“We want to harness every opportunity to promote more skilled jobs that could include a variety of areas including truck drivers, crane operators, warehouse managers, computer operators and warehouse trainees to name a few.

To support the operation of the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal there will be significant investment into the M5 Motorway – Moorebank Avenue and Hume Highway intersection upgrade.

“We want to build Sydney’s third CBD with access to high quality infrastructure that will meet the demands of our changing city for many generations to come,” Cr Waller said.
