Woman, 70, dies in Macquarie Fields house fire

A woman’s body has been found after a fire destroyed a home in Macquarie Fields in the early hours of this morning.

Five people were also treated at the scene for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Emergency services were called to Magnolia Place, Macquarie Fields about 12.45am today (Sunday, January 3), and found the single level brick and tile house well alight.

A 45-year-old woman managed to escape the blaze and told neighbours her mother was still inside.

Two men attempted to enter the home by kicking in the back door but were unsuccessful.

The body of a woman, believed to be in her 70s, was found in the kitchen after the fire was extinguished.

The house has been destroyed.

Crime scene officers and fire investigators will examine the scene later today and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

In a separate incident, a man faced court yesterday over the stabbing of another man at Fairfield a day earlier.

Police allege the pair were known to each other.

About 5pm on New Year’s Day, emergency services were called to Myddleton Avenue, where they found a man with multiple stab wounds.

The man, aged 63, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command attended and commenced inquiries.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with attempted murder.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court.
