Winter appeal to help keep our homeless warm

More and more families in Macarthur are either in crisis or on the precipice of becoming homeless – just as the coldest time of the year arrives.

Kim Landouw from Big Yellow Umbrella agrees.

“In the past 18 months, we have seen an enormous increase in the prevalence of couch surfing, homelessness, mortgage and financial stress in the region,’’ she says.

Once again Big Yellow Umbrella and Wests Group Macarthur have joined forces in a winter appeal for blankets, scarves, beanies and sleeping bags.

They will be delivered to those that most need them to help them stay warm this winter.

“Every donation goes a long way toward assisting those less vulnerable and facing homelessness over the colder months,’’ says Kim Landouw.

Donations can be dropped off at Wests League Club Leumeah and the Big Yellow Umbrella head office in Narellan before July 5.

New or handmade items including scarves, beanies, blankets, sleeping bags, backpacks, reusable water bottles, towels, face washers, toiletries and/or Kmart vouchers will be accepted.

“We are pleased to be able to play a small role in helping individuals and families feel warm, safe and supported this winter,” says Wests Group chairman Alan Buxton.

The appeal will support the Macarthur Homelessness Steering Committee, the representative body of a network of organisations in the region providing support, counselling, food, clothing, and accommodation for those in need.

As an extension to the winter appeal, the Wests community team will be hosting a volunteer event called Love Squared at Wests League Club Leumeah on July 8.

Love Squared is a knitting and crochet event for members, guests, and local knitting groups to help make beanies, scarfs and 25cm squares for blankets.

Those interested or with basic to advance knitting ability are asked to bring along spare balls of wool from their homes (acrylic 8 ply recommended) as well as 4mm needles. Patterns, some wool and morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Registration is necessary and now open via community@westslc.com.au.
