Two RBT officers in hospital, 22 year old to appear in court

A man has been charged after a car ploughed into an RBT site on Campbelltown Road at Leumeah overnight seriously injuring two police officers.

The driver of the vehicle, who was not injured, was initially taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

The 22-year-old man was then taken to Campbelltown Police Station where he was later charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, two counts of causing harm by misconduct in charge of motor vehicle and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and with using a mobile phone when not permitted.

His licence was suspended and he was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today.

Two male senior constables sustained severe leg injuries.

Both officers have undergone surgery for their leg injuries at Liverpool Hospital. One was in a critical condition and one in a serious condition.

A critical incident team will investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident. That investigation will be subject to independent review.

♦ A few hours earlier and about a kilometre north on the same road, three people lost their lives when a car and a truck collided.

Two others were injured when the car crossed the road and was hit by the truck along Campbelltown Road, near the St Andrews Road roundabout.

The accident occurred at around 11.30am.

The male driver, aged 74, and two passengers, a man and a woman, were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, but died at the scene.

A 76-year-old woman and 45-year-old man, who were also in the car, were taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition by paramedics.

The driver of the truck, a 59-year-old man, was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory testing.
