Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun has congratulated the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) on the release today of its plan for the future of transport in NSW, Getting Ahead of the Game, which recommends a range of transport projects to reduce congestion and improve productivity across Sydney – including  getting public transport right for the proposed Western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek.

“We wholeheartedly support TTF’s vision for the future of transport in Sydney, and in particular, for public transport infrastructure to include planning and funding for a rail line that links Badgerys Creek airport with the broader region,” says Mayor Mannoun.

“We have been saying for a long time that as one of the fastest growing regions with a population set to double in the next 20 years, South West Sydney, and Liverpool, its regional capital, needs  efficient public transport and jobs close to where people live.

“The new airport at Badgerys Creek is a significant piece of infrastructure for NSW which according to the Deloitte Report will generate 20,000 jobs in Liverpool alone,’’ he said.

“We need to look at how to best leverage all the infrastructure opportunities particularly around freight, rail, road and air.

“Liverpool is equidistant between the two international airports and is a key transport and logistics hub for the Great South West. Improved public transport infrastructure and employment closer to home will also reduce congestion right across Sydney’s road and rail network.

“What’s required is an integrated transport solution that will both cater for the expected growth in South West Sydney and connect people with the new jobs, housing and infrastructure the airport will generate.

“The new South West Rail link is a great start, but more needs to be done. To fully capitalise on all of the opportunities the airport can provide, what we need is some visionary, Bradfield thinking by all levels of Government – and we need it now.”
