There’s an obvious reason the theme for this year’s Liverpool Mayoral Ball is Liverpool: New Gateway to the World.
It’s a little reminder that Sydney’s second airport will be in the Liverpool area, at Badgerys Creek, says the mayor, Ned Mannoun.
“The Mayoral Ball is an opportunity to toast our great city and enjoy a night out right here in Liverpool, while supporting two important local charities, Share Care and the Liverpool Hospital Trauma Centre,” he said yesterday in launching this year’s fundraiser.
“There is a lot to celebrate in this great city – we will be the home of Sydney’s second international airport, our city centre is growing and changing as we Build Our New City.
“We have a vibrant multicultural community that will grow to more than 326,000 over the next 20 years.
“As the capital of the Great South West, it is our role to lead the way for the region as a generous and compassionate city,’’ the mayor said.
“Last year the inaugural Mayoral Ball raised $50,000 for Young Adults Disabled Association (YADA) and the Liverpool Hospital Cancer Wellness Centre.
“This year I hope to double that figure and raise $100,000 for Share Care and the Liverpool Hospital Trauma Centre.”
Share Care CEO Clare Pearson said she was delighted the mayor had selected them as one of the charity recipients this year.
[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“Share Care has provided South West Sydney with intensive intervention programs for children and young adults with a disability for the past 26 years and is now providing desperately needed overnight respite for parents and carers,” Ms Pearson said.[/social_quote]
“When families are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel and all they can see is more darkness, Share Care can be that light.
“Support from events such as the Mayoral Ball enables us to continue providing our services which include vacation and after school care, early intervention playgroups and day programs for young people with a disability.
“This event will also help us buy a new bus to provide safe, secure and familiar transport for our clients which is a crucial part of the service we provide.”
Share Care was represented at the yesterday’s launch by fundraising officer John Lupton.
Scott D’Amours, Liverpool Hospital Director of Trauma and a trauma surgeon also attended the announcement.
Mr D’Amours said he had noticed a big change in Liverpool over the past few years.
“There is now a lot more of people working together to create a better community in Liverpool – it’s fantastic to see,” he said.
Mayor Mannoun said that while money raised will be split into two, half will always go to Liverpool Hospital in recognition that Liverpool is now a major health services centre.
“We will help one local charity every year as well as a program at the hospital,’’ Mr Mannoun said.
“As one of the biggest institutions in Liverpool, it is wonderful to get the support we do from Liverpool Council and the local community,” said Liverpool Hospital general manager Robynne Cooke.
“Last year the Ball supported our cancer service and this year we’re thankful that the Hospital’s trauma centre has been chosen as one of the recipients of proceeds from the Ball.
“Each year we see more than 3,000 injury related presentations to our Emergency Department.
“The trauma centre treats more than 350 patients with life-threatening injuries every year. We have the highest level of specialists available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
