Work on stage one of the $1.6 billion, 31 kilometre upgrade of The Northern Road will start before the end of the year.
Tenders have been called for the work, which will be between Old Northern Road at Narellan and Peter Brock Drive at the burgeoning Oran Park.
Assistant Infrastructure Minister Jamie Briggs and NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Duncan Gay said construction is expected to start before the end of the year.
“With the $500 million Bringelly Road upgrade now under way, this is another important milestone in our joint $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan which will create thousands of jobs and capitalise on the economic gains from developing an airport at Badgerys Creek,” Mr Briggs said.
“The Northern Road will be upgraded from two lanes to a minimum of four lanes between Narellan and the M4 Motorway.
“These game changing infrastructure projects are a key part of our Economic Action Strategy to create more local jobs, slash travel times for motorists and boost economic growth in Western Sydney, making it an even better place to live and do business.
“The Northern Road will be a vital transport corridor to the South West Growth Centre—expected to house around 300,000 residents and create capacity for more than 22,000 jobs,” Mr Gay said.
“The upgrade will transform the current two lane road into a major transport and freight route, cutting travel times and reducing costs for the people and businesses of south west Sydney.
“While tenders are being invited for stage one, detailed design is also under way for stage two between Peter Brock Drive to Mersey Road and planning has started for Stage three and four from Mersey Road to the M4 Motorway.
“Residents will also see construction start from July on the first projects, under the $200 million Local Roads Package.”
Upgrades funded under the Local Roads Package to date include:
$17.5 million to Campbelltown City Council to upgrade Eagle Vale Drive,
$5.8 million to Fairfield City Council to upgrade intersections on the Cumberland Highway,
$5.7 million to Fairfield City Council to upgrade Wetherill Street,
$2.3 million to Camden Council for intersection upgrades and scoping work on Argyle Street and Camden Valley Way.
