Why Super Rugby is coming to Campbelltown on February 15

At 3pm on Saturday, February 15 at Campbelltown Showground, the Brumbies will take on the Waratahs in a women’s Super Rugby trial.

There’s a simple reason this important last hit out before the season will be held at the home of the Campbelltown Harlequins rugby club: local women’s rugby is booming and NSW Rugby knows it.

Last season, the Harlequins women’s side exceeded expectations to win the Division 1 plate grand final against traditional rugby club Gordon.

The current Wallaroos, the national women’s rugby side, boasts two players who came through the Harlequins pathways: Sally Fuesaina and Atasi Lafai, pictured above.

Both will feature in the February 15 trial at their old home ground, with Fuesaina lining up for her franchise, the Brumbies, while Lafai will be in the Waratahs colours.

Lafai and Fuesaina will be just two of several Wallaroos who will be running on to the Campbelltown Showground playing arena on February 15.

The match will also feature a number of Olympic Sevens players as they begin their push to make the Wallaroos World Cup squad.

It’s also worth noting that eight Harlequin girls have been selected in  the Waratahs Academy (U16): Ana Jokatama, Chole Nifo, Charlotte Nifo, Jasmine Ratu, Kayla Nutland, Rebecca Cusack, Najeida Fong, and Sue – Rose Vuki.

“Women’s rugby is certainly going well in Campbelltown,’’ says club stalwart Andrew Choice.

“It is great to Super level teams playing here, bringing the game back to its roots.

“Kick off is at 3pm – please get down there and support it.’’

The game will be preceded by a Junior “Try Rugby” program kicking off at 12 noon for juniors aged between 7 and 8.
