Students take action to fix traffic problems outside their school

Motorists arguing in front of students, speeding, illegal U turns and parking, people crossing the road in an unsafe manner.

All these high risk activities unfortunately happen outside most of our schools.

But Year 5 and 6 students from one local school, Glenfield Public, decided that they couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.

Indeed they took real action to try to rectify the situation.

The students produced a list of road safety improvements such as speed reduction devices outside their school on Waterloo Place.

They also recommended No Parking restrictions; the installation of children’s crossings; a kiss and ride zone on Railway Parade, increased council ranger activity and road safety signage.

Their next step was to seek action on their suggestions for improvements.

They contacted their local member of parliament, the state member for Macquarie Fields, Anoulack Chanthivong, to enlist his support.

Top marks: MP Anoulack Chanthivong at Glenfield Public School.

Mr Chanthivong has now made representations to Campbelltown City Council on behalf of the students.

Council is investigating the matter and will eventually provide advice on the suggested road safety improvements.

In the meantime, the local MP has visited the Glenfield Public School students to thank them for campaigning for road safety improvements around their school.

“It’s fantastic to see that these students are so passionate about creating a safer environment for their peers, staff and parents at the school,” Mr Chanthivong said.

“I was impressed by the ideas students came up with to address the road safety issues as well as their tenacity in contacting me to help advocate on their behalf.”

“It is heartening to know that some of our youngest residents are motivated enough to fight for change in their community,” Mr Chanthivong said.
