In 1914, Camden had a population of around 3,000 people.
When World War I broke out that year and in the following four years, almost 500 residents volunteered to serve their country.
That is almost 20 per cent of the total population, a tremendous effort from Camden.
Now, a little over 100 years later, Camden Council wants to honours some of those servicemen and women by naming streets after them in a new housing estate in Oran Park Town.
After consulting with the Camden Historical Society, council has selected 27 names to be used to name streets in the Catherine Park Estate.
It unanimously approved the proposal at last week’s meeting and will now place it on public exhibition for 28 days.
If no submissions are received, council will adopt the list of proposed road names.
Prior to the meeting which approved the plan, Mayor Lara Symkowiak welcomed the proposal.
“While our area is experiencing immense growth it is important that we remain connected to our heritage and pay tribute to our past,” Cr Symkowiak said.
“The resilient and brave character of our founding community is demonstrated by the vast number of locals who volunteered to serve overseas during World War I.’’
At last week’s meeting, Camden Council also voted to name another 14 streets in Catherine Park estate after people and places connected to the Oran Park Raceway, waterbodies, precious gems and metals.
The Catherine Park Estate development, which is across from Oran Park Town, will create 3,200 properties in a 320 hectare site.
Subdivision of the site is complete and construction on some of the properties has already started.
