Carers and the important work they do often go unrecognised.

The spotlight so far this month has been on mental health but next week it will be on carers.

In the south west region residents are being urged to show they care by recognising the important work carers do in our community during National Carers Week, October 11 to 17.

Ms Emma Dart, the acting carer program coordinator for South West Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) said National Carers Week is a time to celebrate the remarkable efforts of thousands of carers across the country – who often go unrecognised.

“There are about 2.7 million Australian carers providing unpaid care and support to family members or friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail aged,” Ms Dart said.

“Anyone at any time can become a carer and most people are likely to care for a friend or family member at some point in their lives.

“Caring can often become more demanding as time progresses and carers may feel isolated and overwhelmed. It is very important that carers look after their own needs in order to help in their role as a carer.

“Carers Week is an ideal time to find out how we can support carers in this important role and ensure we continue to build a strong and cohesive community,” she said.

A range of activities have been organised across SWSLHD during National Carers Week, including information seminars and resources for the public about the support and education carers need.

Information and support for carers is available on the SWSLHD Carers Program website.
