As we head closer to Christmas and the end of another year it’s inevitable one eye will be on what the future holds.

Looking at these 17 wonderful local students is just another reason to feel confident that our best days are ahead of us in this lucky country of ours.

Every talented student represents a local school and they all share a love for science.

Last week they were presented with a Victor Chang School Science Award for their excellent achievements and passion for science.

The awards are partly there to encourage young people, especially girls, to study science and it is indeed good to see female names in the list that we publish below.

Everything is important – it goes without saying.

Sport, the arts, engineering, teaching, they all contribute to making us all better.

But science will be crucial in coming decades as we grapple with climate change and other challenges.

So, take a bow all you local science students, and may you have a long career in science.
