The ute was also driven into the carpark of the nearby Campbelltown police station.

It is not clear what the motive was for the destruction of the shopfronts.

The pursuit continued along the Hume Highway before travelling east along the M5 Motorway, and which was tracked by Polair for about 50 kilometres to Mascot.

The vehicle then allegedly entered a restricted Sydney International Airport area controlled by a boom gate before the driver allegedly rammed the gate, causing significant damage.

The vehicle stopped and the driver, a 47-year-old man, was arrested by officers attached to Highway Patrol, assisted by the dog squad.

He was subject to a roadside drug test, allegedly returning a positive detection to methamphetamine.
