East Campbelltown residents who love tennis – playing or watching – here’s some Christmas cheer for you.
In a reversal of recent trends, the tennis complex at Ruse will receive a major makeover early next year.
It follows the successful application by Campbelltown Council for funding under the newly established NSW ATP Cup Tennis Legacy Fund.
“An upgrade to the Ruse tennis courts to completely resurface two courts and provide accessible fencing is planned to begin in February next year,’’ says the council’s acting director of city lifestyles Destry Puia.
“The upgrades will be funded by $12,000 from the NSW ATP Cup Legacy Fund and $50,000 from council.’’
Only one of the four courts at Ruse has been available to the community to play in or for coaching in the past few years.
With the popularity of the sport in decline, some local courts have been converted into spaces for other sports, such as basketball.
The NSW ATP Cup Tennis Legacy Fund is an attempt to revive the popularity of tennis, especially at grassroot level.
Tennis NSW CEO Lawrence Robertson said the partnership between Tennis NSW and the NSW Government will provide more than $5 million in funding to grassroots tennis over the next three years.
“The first round of Legacy Fund initiatives will enable the delivery of $1.52 million in projects at clubs, associations and council facilities across NSW,” Mr Robertson said.
“The fund also supports participation programs that reduce barriers to playing tennis.
“This includes people with disability, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, women and girls, as well as those needing support with mental health.’’
