Labor says it has developed a model for affordable preschool

Campbelltown MP Greg Warren says NSW Labor’s plan to develop an affordable preschool model will benefit local families by allowing children to access affordable preschool facilities for the international benchmark of 15 hours per week.

“NSW invests the lowest amount per child in preschool education in Australia,’’ Mr Warren said.

“This means that parents in areas like Campbelltown are paying almost twice as much as parents from other state and territories,” Mr Warren said.

Mr Warren believes that it will be a great relief to families in Campbelltown who are struggling to make ends meet, allowing them to offer their children the best educational experience without breaking the bank.

“Offering 15 hours per week of affordable preschool is important for children and their families,’’ he said.

“Children need to be nurtured and have the opportunity to develop social skills to prepare for school.

Ms Heather Kilgour, director of Campbelltown community preschool, commended Labor’s proposal and the benefits that it will have for local families.

“Parents want their children in preschool and not in long day care,’’ Ms Kilgour said.

“Parents want to offer their children the best start in life and the opportunity to prepare for school.

“Labor’s plan will allow parents to achieve this,” Ms Kilgour said.

“Each child is unique and needs to learn how to relate and communicate with other children.

“We need to nurture kids to have high self esteem, be able to do things independently.

“That’s what we work on here. We make sure that children are being prepared for the school environment and that they have the ability to learn in those situations.”
