Sisters Pat Hall and Glenda Cartwright are pictured with MP Chris Hayes, who presented them with Saluting their Service certificates at a recent morning tea ceremony.

Patrick Dewberry was 19 years old when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942 during World War II.

He served in the Royal Australian Engineers with two tours of active service in New Guinea and was involved in the Battle of Shaggy Ridge.

He later embarked for Japan where he served with the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces.

“He would never talk about the horrors of war, but he would tell a story if it was funny and had nothing to do with fighting,’’ his daughter Pat Hall recalled after she and her sister Glenda Cartwright were presented with framed certificates by local MP Chris Hayes.

“He loved his time in Japan,” Ms Hall said.

Mr Hayes, who is the federal member for Fowler, presented Pat and Glenda with Saluting their Service certificates in honour of their late father.

“These certificates are a small token of our nation’s appreciation and gratitude for those who served our country,” Mr Hayes said after the morning tea presentation in his office

“We will always be eternally grateful for their service,” Chris Hayes said.

“If you or a family member are eligible for a certificate, please contact my office on telephone 9726 3988 or email me at chris.hayes.mp@aph.gov.au and I will be happy to forward a form to you,” Chris Hayes said.
