The former federal member for Macarthur, Pat Farmer, has hit the road that leads right back to politics if he wins.
Farmer, who for many years was a legendary long distance runner before entering federal politics, is now the Liberal Party’s hope in the seat of Macquarie Fields for the NSW state election which will be held on Saturday, March 28.
Mr Farmer issued a statement this morning confirming he will be standing.
“I just want to announce to all of my friends and supporters that I have been asked to stand for the state seat of Macquarie Fields and after discussions with Mike Baird, our Premier, I have accepted this privilege and enormous challenge,’’ Mr Farmer said on his Facebook page.
“This seat has never been held by a Liberal before but for me it’s not about the parties we represent but the people and I wish only to serve and improve the area.
“Follow my eight week campaign and if you can help I could do with all the volunteers I can find.’’
Mr Farmer’s main opponent will be Campbelltown councilor Anoulack Chanthivong, who has served one term as mayor.
He was preselected by the Labor Party unopposed after the current MP, Doctor Andrew McDonald, announced that he would not be seeking re-election on March 28.
