Sorry: St Peter’s Anglican Primary School Campbelltown

St Peter’s Anglican Primary School in Campbelltown has issued an apology to parents two days after an unidentified person pleaded guilty to child abuse charges at the school in the 1980s.

While the school did not name the person in an email sent to parents yesterday, it said: “Campbelltown Anglican School wishes to advise that an individual formerly associated with St Peter’s Anglican Primary School pleaded guilty on Monday, 2 February to charges in relation to child abuse offences which occurred in the 1980s.’’

The statement was signed by the chairman of Campbelltown Anglican Schools Council, Mr Nigel Fortescue and the Head of St Peter’s Anglican Primary School, Mr Brendan Gorman.

The emailed note to parents went on to say:

“The Council expresses, in the strongest possible terms, its abhorrence of sexual misconduct or any abuse involving children.

“We are sincerely sorry and unreservedly apologise that abuse of students took place while they attended the school.

“We have fully cooperated with Police and other authorities as they have investigated the matter and will continue to do so.

“The School believes its current child protection procedures are of the highest standard and we will continue to closely monitor these procedures to ensure we provide the safest possible environment for our students.

“We encourage anyone who would like to report instances of abuse to contact NSW Police or alternatively the Professional Standards Unit  of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney on 1800 774 945.’’
