The original planners of Liverpool were right on the money, reckons current Mayor Ned Mannoun.

Speaking after judging the work of University of Technology architecture students set the assignment of redesigning the Liverpool City Centre, Mr Mannoun said Liverpool’s grid was similar to Melbourne’s.

The eight UTS finalists in the competition had been chosen from more than 50 proposals by students.

“It’s amazing what ideas evolve when young minds think about the Liverpool City Centre,” he said.

“There’s also the riverfront, the train connection, the hospital and the warehouses on the other side of the river which offers an incredible opportunity for creative minds.”

The Committee for Sydney will give a $1000 prize to the winner, which will be chosen by Mayor Ned Mannoun and School of Architecture Senior Lecturer Tarsha Finney.

“The students’ designs will help inform our plans for Building Our New City – this is just another of the many innovative ways we are making Liverpool the capital of the Great South West,” the mayor said.
