Kapow: the new graffiti action team truck in action.

A new graffiti removal truck that’s got twice the power of the one it has replaced has joined Campbelltown’s Graffiti Action Team.

The new truck can store up to 50 four litre cans of paint as well as several litres of graffiti removing chemicals, wipes and protective equipment.

That’s more than double the capacity of the previous vehicle which could only carry 20 cans of paint.

It is also fitted with a 1000 litre tank that feeds a high pressure water gun, enabling the team to remove graffiti from most surfaces quickly and effectively.

Since it was officially launched in June 2008, council’s Graffiti Action Team (GAT) team has removed more than 13,900 square metres of unsightly graffiti.

GAT enlists the assistance of contractors, and is also in partnership with government agencies including Juvenile Justice and Corrective Services

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Lake, said that the on-going removal of graffiti across Campbelltown City currently costs Council and ratepayers around $500,000 each year.

“Graffiti is a crime, causing malicious damage to both community and private assets,’’ he said.

“The best defence against graffiti is its rapid removal – that is why the Graffiti Action Team is so vital,” Cr Lake said.

Residents are urged to report all instances of graffiti in public areas on 4645 4000 or via the council’s website, and to ensure that vandalism incidents are also reported to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444, so that police can allocate resources as required.

Free graffiti removal kits are also provided by council to residents and businesses, to encourage the community to become proactive in helping to remove graffiti from their own property.
