There’s a good chance a section of Moorebank will be declared a suburb in its own right and named Nuwarra.
A suggestion has been made by Liverpool Council’s Street Naming Committee to rename part of Moorebank east of Nuwarra Road, south of Newbridge Road and north of the M5 motorway.
The committee recommended that Council write to affected residents to consult with them regarding the proposed name change and a preferred new suburb name from Nuwarra, Nuwarra Waters or an Aboriginal name that refers to the Georges River, which has yet to be decided.
Council has agreed to go ahead and consult with residents who would be affected, and a final decision will be made after that.
The committee did not give a reason why it was suggesting a name change for the area affected, but said its preference was for Nuwarra.
However, the council’s Aboriginal Community Development officer was tasked with researching Aboriginal names that relate to both Moorebank and the Georges River, which would be the eastern boundary of the “new’’ suburb.
Nuwarra Waters was another name suggested as a possible option.
But the committee’s preference was for Nuwarra Road, especially since that thoroughfare provided a neat boundary if the change went ahead.
Council is now in the process of consulting with the residents east of Nuwarra Road.
