Prevention is best when it comes to having safe local streets, says Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor.

The Federal Government’s Safer Communities Fund is aimed at helping to provide security infrastructure initiatives in communities across the country.

Up to $1 million is available to each applicant for projects that address crime and anti-social behaviour and contribute to the safety of communities that may be at risk of racial and/or religious intolerance.

“Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it happening,” says Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor.

Investment in security infrastructure at local crime hotspots would reduce fear of crime and contribute to greater community safety and resilience, he said.

The Coalition Government has committed more than $100 million through the Safer Communities Fund to assist communities in keeping local streets safe from crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We will continue to put funds towards projects that make our streets, communities, and our nation safer,” Mr Taylor said.

Grant applications for Round 2 of the Safer Communities Fund  are now open.

“Local councils and community organisations are invited to apply through this open competitive round for funding for security enhancement projects, such as CCTV, bollards and lighting,’’ Mr Taylor said.

“I encourage potential applicants to contact my office to discuss their projects’ eligibility, and to receive all submission details,” he said.

Further information on the Safer Communities Fund is also available on the Australian Government’s Safer Communities Fund website at www.business.gov.au/safer-communities-fund, or by calling 13 28 46.

Applications close on November 14, 2017.
