The mayor of Campbelltown, George Brticevic, says that today Campbelltown City mourns the sudden loss of one of our most respected and longest standing public figures – Cr Fred Borg.

“It is with sadness that Campbelltown City Council mourns the sudden passing of Cr Fred Borg,” the mayor said in a public statement issued a few moments ago,

“Fred was a community stalwart, working tirelessly for the respect and admiration that saw him stand as a representative of the people of our city for more than 17 years.

“Taking the lead in local fundraising efforts for cancer services and facilities, he was able to touch the lives of many, both directly and indirectly, and his legacy will live on through the many accomplishments of the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer initiative, of which he was the founder and chairperson.

“Fred earned the respect of both councillor colleagues and council staff during his four terms of civic service, and will be greatly missed within Campbelltown City Council and the wider Campbelltown and Macarthur community,’’ the mayor said.

“During his term, Cr Borg held the position of deputy mayor, as well as chair and deputy chair of a range of committees and sub committees, including Access for the Disabled, Works Recreation and Emergency Services, Community Safety, City Works and Corporate Governance.

“Today is a sad day for our city, and on behalf of myself, my fellow councillors, council’s executive team and staff, and our community, I extend heartfelt condolences to Fred’s family and loved ones.

“May we all remember him as a passionate, generous and unwavering citizen and public figure, and a true advocate for all of us.

“He will be sadly missed.”

The State Member for Macquarie Fields, Anoulack Chanthivong, has also paid tribute to Fred Borg:

“I’m deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of my good friend, Cr Fred Borg,” the MP said.

“Much-loved and highly respected, Fred was hugely passionate about Campbelltown and the community he served.

“Fred’s legacy will be the hugely-popular 24-Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur fundraiser, which in 10 years has raised more than $2.5 million in support of local cancer patients through improved treatment and care services.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Fred’s family, friends and loved ones at this time.

“Our community will certainly miss Fred’s generosity, his boundless energy and his charm.”
