Sudden death: the late Fred Borg on the campaign trail for this year’s council elections with running mate Warren Morrison.

Campbelltown is mourning the sudden death of Fred Borg.

The veteran councillor, who was 73 years of age when he died around 11am this morning, had been taken to Campbelltown Hospital after complaining of not feeling well.

His death has devastated the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer family and the wider Campbelltown and Macarthur community.

Several board members have called the South West Voice in tears to express how devastated they are at the news.

Cr Borg, who had been on council for 17 years, was the founder of the popular 24 Hour Fight in 2005.

Earlier this year he received a special council certificate for 50 years of service to the community of Campbelltown.

He was named Campbelltown Australia Day citizen of the year in 2001, one of many awards bestowed on him.

Before getting elected to council Fred Borg was involved with the Campbelltown chamber of commerce.

He was also there at the very start of the Campbelltown Catholic Club back in the 1960s.

But for many Campbelltown residents, they knew Fred Borg as a master fundraiser for charity.

“He was a hard worker for the community, with fundraising for charities and the 24 Hour Fight,” said former Macarthur MP Russell Matheson.

“My sympathies to his family for their loss, Fred was a good member of our local area.”

In September this year Cr Borg was reelected to Campbelltown Council for four more years, but he was even more pleased that his number two candidate, Warren Morrison also got elected.

In another 2016 highlight for “Freddie’’ or “Borgie’’ as he was known, he walked down the aisle for the third time in his life.

Now the family and his friends in the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer will attend his funeral this Friday at the Rosemeadow Catholic Church, Our Lady Help Of Christians.

Fred Borg, RIP.
