The people of Picton are still reeling from the flood damage to their town but at least now they have something to cheer about – thanks to their rugby league team.

The Magpies – reigning Group Six premiers – recorded a 40-4 win over Oakdale at Sid Sharpe Oval on Friday night to help put a bit of the smile back on the faces of the Picton folk, reports MIKE SHEAN.

The match was originally scheduled for Round 2 of the Group Six Rugby League season, but was deferred to the long weekend.

The venue also had to be changed, after the damage to the Magpies’ home, Victoria Park, last weekend in the floods which caused massive damage to parts of Picton central business district and the Wollondilly region.

Picton co-coach Bryce Poisel was a relieved man after the match, when he spoke to Group Six League Live, saying their preparation had been less than perfect.

Poisel said his side hadn’t been able to train on their home ground, and were forced to contend with makeshift training arrangements during the week.

And he had at least one player who had lost property during the floods, so the chance to play football was a welcome distraction for him.

Poisel said his side had ensured their team-mates were being supported with the personal issues being faced by many locals at present.

The Magpies were not at their best during the match, but still managed to record a comfortable win over the Workers, who were determined, if nothing else, in front of a vocal home crowd on Friday night.

Oakdale caused problems for the Picton side throughout the night, but handling inside the Picton 20 proved to be an issue for Jason Hazelton’s men.

Picton had their issues as well, with handling, especially in the second half, becoming a concern for co-coaches Bryce Poisel and Gary Dowse.

The Magpies were always in control of the match, after scoring the opening try of the night, added another two in the first half and led comfortably 18-4 at halftime.

Picton continued on in the second half, and the most pleasing aspect of their win was the fact they kept Oakdale scoreless after the halftime break.

Michael Lett was among the stars for Picton in the win.
