The Picton Magpies and Thirlmere Roosters have honoured a former footballer by contesting the BJ Pendergast Memorial Shield on Sunday afternoon at Victoria Park in round one of the 2015 Group Six CRL premiership.
Pendergast passed away nine years ago, with the two clubs and local rivals meeting annually for a Shield in BJ’s name.
Pendergast’s father Geoff, still involved with the Picton club, spoke about the occasion, saying they’re very proud of the involvement of the two clubs.
Pendergast said both clubs have been very supportive of the Shield, with Sunday marking nine years since his son’s passing.
Pendergast said both clubs knew the significance of the day, and don’t hold back on the football field, which he sees as a mark of respect from both sides for their fallen son.
Picton won the match, with the family present at Victoria Park to present the Shield to the Magpies, pictured left, and mark BJ’s passing, with a minute’s silence after the match.
