The Macarthur region’s mayors have welcomed NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet’s commitment to undertake a final business case to deliver a crucial rail line from Campbelltown-Macarthur to the Western Sydney International Airport.
The Macarthur councils – Campbelltown, Camden and Wollondilly – have long advocated for a direct rail line from the region to the new airport as part of a suite of public transport options, in order to connect residents to its promised jobs and infrastructure.
“With the Macarthur region expected to grow significantly over the next 15 years, a direct rail connection to the airport is needed to ensure our community can share in the vision of an accessible and liveable Western Sydney,” Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss said.
“I welcome the Premier’s announcement and thank the NSW Government for committing to delivering this business case,” Cr Greiss said.
“I look forward to seeing the business case developed as soon as possible to ensure we do not miss out on this critically important rail infrastructure as the opening of the Western Sydney Airport gets closer,” he said.
Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould said he was excited to see the Macarthur to Aerotropolis link included in the plans for the network.
“It’s fantastic to see the government committing to the business case and prioritising the Macarthur to the Aerotropolis link.
“We are calling on the Opposition to match or better this commitment, get on board and deliver this critical infrastructure for our communities,” he said.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said this commitment would give the Macarthur region the strong footing it needs to be future proof.
“The Macarthur region is the powerhouse of South West Sydney, with more growth to come. Camden alone is one of the fastest growing local government areas in the country, welcoming an average of about 100 new residents each and every week,” Cr Fedeli said.
“Game changing infrastructure and planning like this is vital to ensure the Camden, Campbelltown and Wollondilly areas continue to be places people want to live, work and play in. Local governments can’t do it alone, which is why we’re thankful to Premier Perrottet’s commitment to our future.”
Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss also joined Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun to welcome the premier’s announcement of a business case for a new Sydney Metro line that would link Glenfield to Bankstown.
The proposed new line would link Glenfield to Bankstown via Liverpool, with 20km of track laid and would build on the current planned link between Glenfield and the Western Sydney Airport via Leppington.
