The Greens claim they are a real local, grassroots political party and the Macarthur branch is showing the way.

The branch have launched a series of community fundraising drives which will benefit a different local organisation each time.

Two fundraising drives have already been completed, says senior Macarthur Greens member and elected councillor Ben Moroney – and more are in the pipeline.

“Greens branches are autonomous and the Macarthur branch decided that fundraising for community groups would be a worthwhile initiative for us,’’ Cr Moroney said after he and membership officer Sophie Callard presented a cheque for $700 to representatives of the WILMA Women’s Health Centre in Campbelltown.

“Our members were keen to think of ways we could help contribute and use the profile of the Greens to support the local area, and that’s why we’ve begun this donation program,’’ said Ms Callard.

“We held a garage sale with item donations from our members and dedicated the proceeds of the sale to WILMA.

“WILMA do excellent work in Campbelltown that’s vital for so many women in the community.’’

WILMA will use the money to put some TLC into the therapy garden that’s part of their home in Bugden Place, Campbelltown.

“We need action both inside and outside of council to support the most vulnerable in Campbelltown, and I’m proud that the Greens recognize that.”

Cr Moroney told the South West Voice the Wollondilly group Undermine would be the second beneficiary of Macarthu Greens fundraising.

“We are not sure yet how many groups we will support every year so we are playing it by ear at this stage,’’ Cr Moroney said.
