The Labor Party’s candidate for the seat of Macarthur is a local paediatrican who has dedicated his life’s work to making sure local kids get the best start they can.
After completing his training at the Children’s Hospital in Camperdown, Dr Mike Freelander started his residency as a paediatrician at Campbelltown Hospital in 1984.
He moved with his wife Sharon to the Macarthur region that same year, where they raised their six children.
A few short years later, in 1990, Dr Freelander took on the role as head of Paediatrics at Campbelltown Hospital.
Dr Freelander has seen how important it is that families in Macarthur have quality health care.
He set up a practice in Campbelltown and later in Camden, to make sure families could access health care in Macarthur, when and where they need it.
Despite his workload as a paediatrican, Dr Freelander still finds time to give back to his profession, teaching a new generation of doctors as a lecturer at Western Sydney University in Campbelltown.
His hard work and dedication to the region has earned him the respect of local families and residents.
In his 32 years as a paediatrican in the Macarthur region, Dr Freelander has seen over 200,000 patients.
Dr Freelander, who started his career before Medicare was introduced, says he has seen first hand the effects of the Liberals’ $57 billion cuts to hospitals and Medicare has on his patients’ ability to access quality healthcare.
“I’m running as the Labor candidate for Macarthur to protect this vital service for our community,’’ Dr Freelander said.
