Do you want to help break the chain of infection?

That’s this year’s theme for International Infection Prevention Week.

So mark your calendars for October 16 to 22 and get involved.

South West Sydney local Health District (SWSLHD) infection control clinical nurse consultant Donna Schmidt said the week is about increasing awareness around preventing infection and the importance of cleaning our hands.

“The spread of life threatening germs from one person to another is called the chain of infection but this can be broken using some simple day to day habits.

“Cleaning your hands and environmental surfaces regularly, vaccination and a healthy lifestyle all play an important role in preventing the spread of harmful germs,” Ms Schmidt said.

Ms Schmidt said staff will be at Rosemeadow, Narellan, Hoxton Park, Fairfield Community Health Centres and the Oran Park Medical Centre to help raise awareness of the need to protect patients, family and the community from infections.

“We have a number of exciting activities and resources planned, including activity books for children, a natural cleaning recipe brochure, hand hygiene and dental samples, competitions and quizzes, health information and education.”
