A job with the lot: MP praises Maccas in parliament

Cleaning tables, sweeping, mopping, filling condiments and helping customers at Maccas may not seem like the perfect job to many of us.

But to local resident Lee McGillivray, this is his ideal job.

And that is exactly what MP Chris Hayes found out when he visited Lee at a local McDonald’s store.

Lee is a person with a moderate intellectual disability who has worked at McDonald’s for the past 14 years.

And he has no intention of going anywhere else.

Lee obtained employment through Jobsupport, an organisation that helps people with a moderate intellectual disability successfully achieve employment in the regular workforce.

Recently Mr Hayes spoke in the Federal Parliament on Jobsupport, McDonalds and on Lee, praising all three for this great initiative.

“Lee is a star performer, popular among his team and a dedicated employee,’’ the federal member for Fowler told the parliament.

Jobsupport was established in 1986 to show that people with a moderate intellectual disability can successfully work the regular workforce.

“I am proud to be a patron of Jobsupport, an organisation that makes a difference in the lives of many people,’’ Mr Hayes said.

Lee, one of 35 Jobsupport clients who live in the Fowler electorate, finds it difficult to read and write.

His employer, McDonalds, took the time to create a picture book to assist him in knowing the requirements of his job.

“McDonalds has copped many brickbats, but on this occasion they deserve a bouquet for their support of people with disabilities,” Chris Hayes said.
