How do we make independent living for seniors even better?

Open forums this month will get the ball rolling on a plan to improve independent living for older community members and delay their need to enter residential aged care.

The South Western Sydney Primary Health Network is inviting older people and carers to take part in the forums, which will look at how such improvements could be achieved.

The insights of community, healthcare providers and local community organisations will help inform where to focus funds and efforts to support healthy ageing at home.

Initiatives could include things like support for early intervention programs which promote healthy ageing and chronic condition management, or increasing the awareness of GPs about the needs of older people and available services.

Keith McDonald, the chief executive officer of the health network, said the community forums were the first stage of a process to develop solutions specifically for South Western Sydney.

“If you are an older person or a carer, please come along and share your ideas on services that could support our older community members to stay in their homes longer, while continuing to lead happy, healthy and productive lives,” he said.

Face-to-face forums will be held in Campbelltown, Fairfield and Mittagong.
