Well, it looks like we’re off to the polls next Saturday, March 18 for the Campbelltown byelection.
It must be true because yesterday in my letterbox I found a reminder note from Labor’s federal representative, Dr Mike Freelander.
“Voting is compulsory – don’t risk a fine, says the letter from my local member.
Thanks for that, Dr Mike, but given a choice I would take no byelection and more than $500,000 in ratepayers money in the bank.
Thinking about that, what if the state government had managed to change the law in time to save us all that dough?
What would we do with more than a half a million dollars?
It’s academic now so we would be talking about a hypothetical wish list involving $500,000.
Here’s an idea: Top 5 things we could spend $500,000 on that would be heaps better than electing another politician.
♦ Number 1. A statue of Fred Fisher, without a doubt. A big one; big enough to pop up when anyone Googles “big landmarks in Australia’’. Merinos, prawns, pineapples and now, ladies and gentlemen, the big ghost from Campbelltown. Ripper, Rita.
♦ Number 2. A boulevard of famous hands. The Queen Street footpath would be perfect and our poor old main street needs all the help it can get.
♦ Number 3. A tidal beach in one of our parks so local surfers wouldn’t have to travel to Wollongong beaches. Now that would put us on the map. May cost more than half a million though.
♦ Number 4. Walls are trending at the moment, so why not the Macarthur Great Wall along Narellan Road. Not to keep anyone out, just a feature wall, you understand.
♦ Number 5. Give our councillors a pay increase. Settle down, I was only joking. What I meant was share the money among the wonderful local charities.
