Campbelltown Harlequins headed down the Hume Highway on the weekend and a date with the Bowral Blacks in round two of the Illawarra rugby premiership.
The club returned home with wins in first and seconds, with the thirds’ planned trial match against Avondale cancelled due to inclement weather in the Southern Highlands.
In the first grade clash, the home side started very well while Harlequins struggled in the first 40 minutes. But they still managed to run out winners 14 – 3 after a solid defensive effort.
The Harlequins first grade defence is proving to be strong with its try line remaining intact after the first two rounds of the Illawarra competition.
Centre Gregg Dunn had a good game in scoring both the Harlequin tries, with Adam Choice kicking two conversions.
Man of the match went to hooker Vuna Lama.
The competition will be suspended due to Anzac Day and the country championships.
Instead, this Saturday the Harlequins will play a “Centenary of Anzac” match against a representative side made up from players who competed in the 2015 “Taki Toa” tournament.
They day will start with the Harlequins women’s team playing a trial match at 10am.
The NSW Country Championships are being held at Bowral the weekend of May 2, so round three will not be played until May 9.
This will see the first of the local derby matches, with Campbelltown travelling to Camden and Wire Lane to take on the Rams.
Second grade:
Two out of two in 2015 for Harlequins second grade who overcame a spirited Bowral side to take the match and the two competitions. The final score was 20 – 5.
There were tries to Ian Flaxman and Noa Raura with Stephen Cook kicking one conversion and three penalty goals.
Man of the match for Harlequins was awarded to Ian Flaxman.
♦ The Campbelltown Harlequins women’s team competed in two 10 a side games over the weekend. The first game had them up against the Parramatta Two Blues and in a hard fought game the Parramatta team prevailed 15 – 10.
The second game saw the Harlequins taking on Macquarie University, who were boosted by some Blacktown players to make up the numbers.
In an entertaining game both sides enjoyed equal amounts of possession and the end result was a scoreline of 15-15.
The Harlequins women team are improving with each game they play and are enjoying the time on the field. They will play a trial on Anzac day this Saturday, April 25 at home from 10am.
