The mayor of Liverpool, Ned Mannoun, has officially opened the first ever Sports Hall Of Fame in the main library by saying it could become a permanent exhibition.

“This tribute to some of Australia’s best sports men and women reflects the amazing depth of talent that has come out of our region,” Ned Mannoun said at the official opening earlier today.

“Names like Michael Clarke, Mark Bosnich, Anthony Minichiello, Cindy-Lu Fitzpatrick and Suzy Balogh – all well-known Australian sporting icons who have represented their country at the highest levels have come from the great south west.”

Anthony Minichiello was the guest of honour at the opening.

The Liverpool Sports Hall Of Fame will become a permanent fixture inside the Liverpool City Library, showcasing memorabilia of sporting stars who have hailed from the Liverpool region.

Each exhibition will last 12 months before a new set of sporting icons from the area are recognised.

Among the current memorabilia on show is a cricket bat and pair of gloves used by current Australia Cricket captain Michael Clarke to score his record-breaking 329 not out at the Sydney Cricket Ground against India in 2012.

A signed pair of rugby league boots worn by rugby league legend Anthony Minichiello, an Australian Rugby League jersey worn by Brad Fittler and a tracksuit worn by champion swimmer, Cindy-Lu Fitzpatrick at the XII Commonwealth Games Brisbane 1982, are also on display.

The current cabinet full of collector’s items will be open to the public during normal library hours, which you can view at http://mylibrary.liverpool.nsw.gov.au/contact-us

It is planned that the next exhibition will feature items from the champion Ingham Family horse racing collection.

Donations, ideas and recommendations to help grow the humble Hall of Fame cabinet into a room bursting with memories of Liverpool legends – young and old – are being sought from members of the public.

“[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]Wouldn’t it be great if we could turn this in to a dedicated, purpose-built Hall Of Fame space that could hold the memories of all Liverpool’s past, current and future sporting champions,” Mayor Mannoun said.

Historical material such as local sports club photos, videos and scrapbooks of champions in their junior sporting years would be particularly valuable.

  1. This is another project instigated by Gary Lucas during his stint as Councillor July 2012 and finally implemented in August 2015, seems Council eventually gets around to all the good ideas suggested some time ago.
