New workshops are perfect for people who want to learn about gardening in smaller spaces.

More and more of us across the Sydney metropolitan area are living in homes without gardens or homes with small garden spaces.

Even here in Campbelltown – just take a look around at the number of new apartments going up in and around Queen Street.

An innovative new year long program is aimed at people with an interest in gardening – but perhaps without the time, space or knowledge.

The Inside Dig is a partnership between the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and the Yates Garden Company.

These workshops in Sydney and Mt Annan will share expertise and insights on gardening in a relaxed and friendly setting with a range of gardening experts.

If you’re looking to learn hands-on techniques The Inside Dig will be for you, while participants will also meet leading horticulturalists.

“Gardening is not only good for our environment but good for your health,’’ says Sophie Daniel, community and education programs at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

“Today many of us are living in homes which don’t have traditional gardens or have balcony gardens – this shouldn’t mean you can’t enjoy the benefits of gardening.

“The workshop has been designed specifically for those who have an interest in gardening, who want to take some time for themselves and enjoy the social and health benefits of getting their hands dirty, but don’t know where to begin.

“Regardless of your level of gardening experience, we want to give you the confidence and tools to build and enjoy your very own beautiful, abundant garden.

“So, be it a backyard, a balcony or a bean pot, we plan to have a lot of fun and learning along the way.

“We are thrilled to be working with this special horticultural institution, sharing what will undoubtedly be a great wealth of combined knowledge with the next wave of garden loves,’’ says Angie Thomas, horticultural communications manager at Yates.

The Inside Dig workshop series will be held monthly and each session will incorporate a different theme or gardening topic based on the season.

The first workshop will explore the topic of Growing Happy Potted Plants, with a focus on vegetables, herbs and flowers and discussion about soil types, planting techniques, timing and pot recommendations.

It will include a rare behind the scenes tour of the Garden’s nursery and each participant will receive a tailored Yates starter pack to take home.
