Politicians come and go as often as their climate change policies.
Unlike them, an event that has captured the imagination after starting out in Australia, Earth Hour, is now in its 10th year.
Last year, Campbelltown arts centre got in on the act by hosting a free Earth Hour evening, which ended up being a very successful inaugural event.
The arts centre will do it all in 2017 by hosting a free Earth Hour evening on Saturday, March 25.
This year the Earth Hour event at the arts centre has been dubbed Caring for our Future.
Families are invited to join in celebrating 10 years of Earth Hour with the local community, including Aboriginal descendants of those who have been living sustainably on the land for tens of thousands of years.
This year’s event aims to “connect the community to the past and the present, and show how to care for the future through a number of free activities for all ages, including traditional dance, storytelling, hands-on artistic workshops and displays.
In what could be the highlight of the night, guests will be invited to sit around a fire pit under the night sky between 8.30pm and 9.30 and listen to traditional Dreamtime stories.
They will also get to watch dance performances by local Aboriginal people during that time.
Earth Hour began in 2007 as an Australian grassroots movement, and has since grown into the world’s biggest initiative focused on creating awareness of the need to tackle climate change.
Ten years later it’s still around, in just about every local community, including here in the south west region.
