Dry July: here’s cheers to no grog for a month

C'mon: giving up grog for a good cause during Dry July is also good for you.
Last year’s Dry July team are back this year with some great new ideas about how the community can get involved.

Start getting your crew together – it’s almost that time of year where you can give up the grog to support your local Cancer Therapy Centre.

The Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre has again been chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the Dry July campaign and has some exciting new ideas about how the community can get on board to support adults living with cancer.

Dry July challenges people to commit to one month without drinking alcohol, while raising funds through sponsorship from family, friends and colleagues.

This year, Campbelltown Hospital is also holding a number of other fundraisers including a candle/soap stall, a bake-off, a hamburger day and a Devonshire tea.

Director of the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre, associate professor Stephen Della-Fiorentina said the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre supports the Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and greater Macarthur areas.

“We provide services for about 1,750 new adult cancer patients a year, as well as 9,000 people following their treatment,” Prof Della-Fiorentina said.

“When you’re diagnosed with cancer, it’s hard to find the time or energy to think about anything other than treating the cancer.

“Through Dry July, we are raising money to ease that burden, reduce stress and add a bit of comfort for our patients through wellness programs.

“All the money we raise will directly impact the lives of people being treated for cancer. This year, we are focussing on wellness programs including massage, yoga, art workshops, meditation and exercise, a water feature and landscaping for the garden outside our chemotherapy suite,” he said.

So gather a team and register for Dry July to help support cancer patients treated at Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre, Campbelltown and Camden Hospitals. Visit the Dry July website here and be sure to have your funds allocated to the Centre.

You can also get involved in the hospital’s fundraisers. For more information call 4634 4344 or visit the cancer support website here.
